The challenge of this illusive sound motivated Tube Tech founder and designer John Petersen to design and manufacture something that sounded just excately the same, featuring equal specs for all components. The smooth sound of the Pultecs made these eq”s very different and attractive. The Tube-Tech PE1A program equalizer was originally made as a European exact equivalent of the US Pultec program eq EQP1A, that became very popular in the US during the eighties in recording studios in New York and LA. This was our message when promoting the very first Tube-Tech equalizer back in 1985. “The Tube-Tech program EQ PE1A is exactly the same as Pultec program EQ!”

The high frequency and midrange bands really stand out in terms of transparency and clarity, and the PE 1C is broadly regarded as one of the world’s finest passive tube based equalizers. When the two sections are combined, this results in truly unique EQ curves, often named the “Low End Trick” and very useful for cleaning up low/mid frequencies. The PE 1C low end section combines two separate passive EQ filters with slightly different cut/boost frequencies. With the original Pultec out of production for decades and used examples demanding sky-high prices, the PE 1C is by far the easiest way to achieve this unique and coveted sound. The PE 1C is a passive, all-tube EQ, based on the classic PULTEC EQP 1A design and featuring a passive EQ section and a high quality op amp. There are no racking marks and it is almost like buying a brand new unit. This particular example is in MINT condition, one owner with very little used. This TubTech is a modern replica of this classic EQ and yes, it does sound like the original Pultec unit it is based on but is probably a tad more reliable. It does throw up the all to standard unrecognized developer message from Apple, but after instructing them to mind their own business, all is good. When I was working in studios the ‘go to’ EQ unit for kick drum, vocals and a lesser extent guitars was the amazing Pultec EQP-1A.

The Warmy-EP1A is available for macOS and Windows in 64-bit AU, VST, and AAX formats.ĭownload and install were quick and easy. It let me get more life out of the lowest frequencies without getting muddy and add a touch of tube drive. I tried it out on some vintage synth pads, and I was impressed with the results. It comes with some factory presets, and you can save user presets. The plugin also emulates the tube drive found in original units with up to 16X oversampling. There’s also a bandwidth knob that shapes the Q of the High Boost.

You can still choose to set them in the same or similar frequency range, but it’s less about that at the high-end. The high-frequency section is slightly different because it has individual controls for the Boost and Cut range. The plugin employs non-linear modeling to replicate the hardware original more realistically. What it gives you is a full-bodied sound without losing clarity, and that’s why people say it’s so musical. The Boost tends to be slightly more prominent than the attenuation, which creates a bit of a push and pull effect. If we look at the low-frequency section on the EP1A GUI, we have the same frequency selection you’d find on a hardware unit, along with Boost and Cut level knobs. So, what is it that makes the Pultec sound so desirable?įunnily enough, much of the appeal comes from something that the original manufacturers advised against boosting and cutting the same frequency simultaneously.īoosting and cutting at the same time has become the go-to trick with a Pultec EQ over decades, and it’s where the magic is. When people describe the Pultec EQ, they use words like musical (which is often overused as a generic descriptor, but very fitting this time) and magical. I like to use the hardware because it’s hands-on, but sometimes, the plugins do a better job.

I own a few Pultec-style plugins and a hardware clone. It’s always interesting to hear different takes on a quite iconic sound. There are already lots of tributes and clones of the famous Pultec EQ, and that’s not a complaint.
